What are collection pages?
A collection page displays the products that are assigned to a particular collection in the store. Grouping products into collections makes it easier for customers to find them.
How to create a collection
There are two main elements that make up a collection page; the first is the collection of products itself, and the second is the collection page template which, when assigned to a collection, can be used to create different layouts for different collections.
Collections of products are created in the Shopify admin area, within Products > Collections > Create collection. Keep in mind that collections are intended to help customers find products by category or characteristic. Refer to Shopify's Collections documentation for more.
Tip
How to set up a collection page
Steps
- Open the Theme editor and select Collections from the dropdown at the top then select your chosen template (e.g. Default)
- Click on Collection to see the collection page settings.
- Choose whether to Show product vendors above each product title.
- In the Layout settings, configure the Products per row (for large screens) and Products per page.
- Set the Featured image crop or hide a Featured image for a simpler layout.
- Set the Title position and Description position. The title and collection description can be shown above or below the collection featured image or hidden. If the collection title is hidden be sure to add another heading on the page.
- In the Filtering settings, chose Enable filtering and decide whether to Show product counts in the filter.
- Select Show 'sort by' option to allow sorting. The collection's default sort order will always be shown.
How to control the product cards
While the collection template Layout settings affect the layout of a specific template, the settings in Theme Settings > Products > Cards control the appearance of product cards across the store.
Adjust the Image aspect ratio (shape) and Image alignment settings to ensure that images in the product cards are displayed in the best way possible. Where a product has more than one image, the Show second image on hover setting can be selected. If this setting is not selected, then the main product image will always be displayed.
Product labels
In the Expression theme, labels can be shown over the image to communicate important details such as sold out and sale price reductino. These labels are managed in Theme Settings > Products. Choose the preferred Sale label message and Label style. Expression offers a distinctive flag option or a simple block.
Swatches
Enable swatches on the product card using the card settings in Theme settings > Products. Refer to our Swatches article for more details.
FAQs
How do I control the /collections/all catalog page?
Shopify stores have a page at the URL your-store.com/collections/all that lists all of the visible products in the store. This is the store's catalog page. By default, products on the catalog page are shown in alphabetical order and use the default collection template. To control what is shown or change the collection heading, go to the Shopify admin area and create a new automated collection of all products and give this new collection the handle all. Refer to the Shopify's Catalog page guide for more details.

Can I use Shopify visual metafield filters?
Versions of the Expression theme after 8.2.0 support Shopify's visual filters using custom metafields and category metafields when the grouped filter values are managed manually in the Search and Discovery app.
