What is the cart?
The cart is where your customers accumulate and review their selected products before proceeding to the checkout. In addition to the cart page, the Boost theme also has a cart summary where customers can quickly see the items currently in their cart from any page.
How to set the add to cart behavior
The settings which control what happens when a customer adds an item to their cart are managed under Theme settings > Cart.
Steps
- Open the Theme editor and go to Theme settings > Cart.
- Use the Add to cart action setting to control what action is taken when a customer adds something to their cart.
Add to cart action
The Add to cart action setting controls what happens after a customer adds something to their cart. In the Boost theme, there are three options:
-
Show modal: When a customer adds something to their cart and there is sufficient stock, a modal will show in the top right hand side of the screen listing the item that has just been added. The text on the Add to cart button will change to indicate that the item is being added to the cart. The customer will remain on their current page.
- Go to cart page (with quantity check): When a customer adds something to their cart, the text on the Add to cart button will change to indicate that the item is being added to the cart. Following a successful quantity check, the customer will be redirected to the cart page.
- Go to cart page (JS disabled): When a customer adds something to their cart, they will immediately be directed to the cart page. There are no changes to the button text. No checks on available stock quantity are performed. Shopify will however still perform these stock checks during the checkout process. This option can be useful for app integration.
How to set up the cart page
The cart page is a dedicated page for customers to review and manage the items they have added to the shopping cart before proceeding to checkout. This page can be configured and customized like other pages of the store using the wide range of sections supplied in the Boost theme.
Steps
- Open the Theme Editor and select Cart from the dropdown at the top.
- In the Template section, click on Cart to configure the settings for the cart page.
- Additional sections such as an Image with text or a Featured collection can be added above or below the cart section for cross selling or promotional purposes.
Cart page settings
The cart page settings control the following features:
- Show tax and shipping information which displays any tax status and shipping policy links.
- Enable cart notes which permits customers to attach notes on the order.
- The option to link to a Terms and Conditions Page by using the page picker or a dynamic source (metafield). When added, customers will be required to accept the terms and conditions using a checkbox before proceeding to the checkout.
- Show additional checkout options is the setting used to enable Shopify's dynamic checkout buttons.
- Show backorder text shows for products which use Shopify inventory tracking and are available to purchase when out of stock.
Recently viewed products
Use the setting Show recently viewed products to show more products below the main cart content. The recently viewed products will appear automatically and will show up to six recently viewed products that are not currently in the cart. Use the setting Show vendor on recently viewed products to control whether the vendor is displayed below the product title.
Note
Shipping calculator
The Boost theme includes a Shipping calculator feature that uses the shipping and delivery rates set out in the Shopify admin under Settings > Shipping and delivery.
Cart summary
On larger screens, a cart summary is shown when customers hover over the cart icon. This allows customers to quickly see the items in their cart from any page.
FAQs
How do I change my cart icon?
To change the cart icon in the Boost theme, go to the Theme editor and open the Header settings. Scroll down to the Cart icon settings and select Bag or Cart.
Where does the continue shopping link go to?
When there are items in the cart and the Continue shopping link is clicked, it will take customers to the collection that the first item in the cart appears in.
In an empty cart, the Continue shopping link will go to the store catalog page. All Shopify stores have a page at the URL your-store.com/collections/all that lists all of the visible products in the store. This is the store's catalog page. By default, products on the catalog page are shown in alphabetical order and use the default collection template. Refer to the Shopify's Catalog page guide for more details.
