What is the cart?
The cart is where customers accumulate and review their selected products before proceeding to the checkout. It allows customers to easily add, modify and remove products, while providing a clear overview of any discounts and subtotals of their intended purchases.
How to set up the cart
Steps
- Go to the Theme editor, then select Theme settings > Cart.
- The When 'Add to cart' is clicked setting controls what action is taken after a customer adds an item to their cart (see below).
When 'Add to cart' is clicked setting
This setting controls what action is taken after a customer adds something to their cart. In the Showcase theme, there are five options to select from.
-
- Stay on the same page: A tick animates in the Add to cart button, the cart icon updates in the header and the customer remains on the product page.
- Open popup with checkout button: A tick animates in the Add to cart button, the cart icon updates in the header and a notification appears on the top right of the screen showing the view cart and checkout button.
- Open popup without checkout button: A tick animates in the Add to cart button, the cart icon updates in the header and a notification appears on the top right of the screen showing the view cart button only.
- Go to the cart page (with quantity check): The Showcase theme will perform an immediate new inventory check on the stock level before adding the item to cart. If the inventory levels are adequate then the item will be added successfully and the customer will be taken to the cart page.
- Go to the cart page (JS disabled): When a customer adds an item to their cart, they will immediately be directed to the cart page without any new inventory checks being performed. Shopify will however still perform these checks during the checkout process. This option is best for app integration.
Cart page
The cart page is a dedicated page for customers to review and manage the items they have added to the shopping cart before proceeding to checkout.
Steps
- Open the Theme editor, and select Cart from the dropdown at the top.
- In the Template section, click on Cart page.
Cart page settings
In the cart page settings, there are a variety of settings that can be selected.
- Show Terms and Conditions checkbox: Customers will be required to check the box before proceeding to the checkout. Set the Page for 'Terms and conditions' link. Additional checkout buttons will be hidden if the checkbox is shown.
- Page for 'Continue shopping' link: Set the page to link to when customers click 'Continue shopping'. If no link is added then customers will be redirected to the /collections/all catalog page.
- Enable order notes: Customers will be allowed to attach notes to the order.
- Show tax status and shipping information: This will display any tax status and shipping policy links.
- Show additional checkout options: This will provide the option to enable Shopify's dynamic checkout buttons.
- Show backorder text: This is used to indicate to customers that an item is currently out of stock but will be shipped when it is back in stock. This setting only displays the text for products which have Shopify inventory tracking enabled, and have been set so they can be purchased when out of stock.
