Upgrading to Canopy v6

Canopy v6 is a complete ground-up rebuild that comes packed with a host of entirely new sections, a series of powerful new features, functionalities and settings, as well as considerable SEO and performance improvements.

This new version of the Canopy theme still has all the core features of Canopy v5, such as the docked side cart, quick quantity buttons and flexible layout, but also contains a lot more, including:

• Product comparison grid section: An excellent way of visually presenting high-level overviews of key product features, side-by-side, in a compact and easy to use section.
• Countdown timer section: Create urgency around sales events or promotions with an animated timer that counts down in seconds, minutes, hours, and days from a specific date and time.
• Shoppable image section: Place 'hotspots' over an image to assist with upselling or guiding customers to complementary products with this interactive 'Shop the Look' section.
• Promo strip section: A convenient way to share discount codes or special messages with your customers to help drive sales and increase conversion rates.
• Scrolling banner section: Bring motion to your store and showcase exciting updates, breaking news, or up-to-date information with a visually engaging row of moving content.
• Age verification popup section: Allow customers to verify their age prior to browsing, with the click of a button.
• Product compare feature: Allow customers to make more informed purchasing decisions, and increase conversion rates, by comparing multiple products on the Collection and Search templates.
• Section groups: Add, remove and reorder multiple sections within easy to manage groups.

Upgrading

If your store is using Canopy v5 or an earlier version, you can upgrade to Canopy v6 for free. Upgrading to Canopy v6 is optional, but if you decide to proceed, you will need to install and configure it to match your current live store, just as you would with any other new theme. All images, products, collections etc will still be available in the Shopify admin area and will not need re-adding.

Since Canopy v6 represents a major version update, it cannot be auto-updated. Do note that Shopify may provide the option to auto-update, but it is advised not to use the auto-update option when first moving to v6. The update functionality is controlled by the Shopify platform so the theme cannot prevent this from being displayed as an option.

Once Canopy v6 is set up, all future updates within the v6.x series should auto-update, making this a one-time setup task to ensure the best coding standards and latest functionality. There are no plans to redesign Canopy from the ground up for the foreseeable future as this major enhancement future-proofs this incredible theme, making it one of the most powerful, feature-rich, and performant themes on the Shopify Theme Store.

Section renaming

Some sections in Canopy v6 have been renamed to better describe newer functionalities and features. The table below shows the new section names.

FAQs

I've just auto-updated my theme. Why doesn't it look like my live store?

Canopy v6 is a major version update which means it cannot successfully be automatically updated, even though Shopify may provide the facility to do this [limitation with the platform updating feature].  You will need to install a new copy of Canopy v6 and configure it to match your current live store, just as you would with any other new theme. Please refer to Upgrading for more.

Do I have to update to Canopy v6?

No, it is totally optional. However, in order to avail of the incredible new sections, features, and functionalities, as well as all future updates, we would recommend that you download the latest version and reset up your store on that version. 

Will I need to set my theme up again any time soon?

No. All future updates within the v6.x series should auto-update, making this a one-time setup task. We have no plans to redesign Canopy from the ground up for the foreseeable future.

I can't see a particular theme style, where has it gone?

Over time we remove and add different theme styles, so the original one that you saw when you first installed Canopy may longer be there. Rest assured, you still have all the settings and sections required to build your store.

My header is black and white, how can I change the colors?

The colors for the header and navigation are held in the relevant section. Scroll down to the bottom of the Header settings to set the Style.
