Multiple variant images – User Guides

Only display the images/media assets associated with a particular product variant.

Multiple variant images (also known as media grouping) is a way to display only the images/media assets associated with a particular product variant. For example, when a customer clicks on the 'Red' variant, only the images of the red product are shown.

This smart feature enhances the shopping experience by only showing the relevant images, videos and models based on the customer's selection. It keeps product pages organized and improves focus. Say goodbye to cluttered product pages and hello to improved customer engagement and conversion!

Tip

If some products don’t lend themselves to the use of media grouping, or if different products need to be grouped by different variant options, alternate product templates can be created to make use of media grouping on some products, and exclude it from others!

Setting up multiple variant images

Steps

Open the Theme editor, and select the relevant product template from the dropdown at the top of the page (e.g. default product)
Click on the Product section on the left, and find the Multiple variant images settings.
Select Show media only associated with the selected variant.
Within the Variant option label setting, enter the Variant option label around which media will be grouped e.g. Color
Arrange the product media in Admin > Products so that they are grouped by this variant option.

Setting up product images for grouping

The previous steps enables this feature, however for it to work fully, you'll need to arrange your product images in the correct order within the Shopify admin area.

Steps

In the Shopify admin area, navigate to Products and pick a product.
Order the product media (images, video etc) to ensure all the images for the chosen variant option are grouped together. For example, if the Variant option label chosen was Color, then group all the red images together, all the cream images together and the green images together in sequence. The order of the product media is important.
Assign the first image of the variant option chosen for grouping (e.g. the first red image) to all the relevant variants in your product setup. The very first red image should be associated with all red variants, then, the very first cream image added to all cream variants etc.

Tip

If products have more than one variant option, using the Shopify Group by dropdown to group variants by Color may make it easier to assign images.

FAQs

I have product images which I always want to appear, no matter what variant/color is chosen. Can I do this?

Not currently. You'll need to hire a developer to assist with this.

Can I use media grouping for more than one option per product?

Media grouping will apply to only one variant option per product e.g. Color or Size.

Can media grouping work for more than one language?

This feature works with multiple languages. Simply enter the variant label title in the languages you support on your store and separate them with a comma.
