What is the cart?
The cart is where your customers accumulate and review their selected products before proceeding to the checkout.
How to set up the cart
The main cart settings are configured under Theme settings > Cart. Symmetry has two cart experiences for customers, the cart page, covered in this guide, and the cart drawer.
Steps
- For all the main settings relating to the cart open the Theme editor, then select Theme settings > Cart.
- Select Drawer or Page in the Cart type setting dropdown to assign the preferred cart experience once an item is added to the cart.
- The After adding to cart setting controls what action is taken after a customer adds something to their cart
- Show the cart drawer: When a customer adds something to their cart, a drawer will slide in from the right hand side of the screen. The customer will remain on their current page, and will be able to review their cart within the drawer.
- Show notification: This option displays a small temporary notification beside the cart icon to notify a customer that the selected item has been added to the cart.
- Go to the cart page (with quantity check): Selecting this setting performs an immediate new inventory check on the stock level before adding the item to cart. If the inventory levels are adequate then the item gets added successfully and the customer is taken to the cart page. This is helpful for flash sales and low stock items.
- Go to the cart page (JS disabled): This option is for use when a customer adds something to their cart, they will immediately be directed to the cart page without any new inventory checks being performed. Shopify will however still perform these checks during the checkout process. This option is best for app integration.
- Select whether to show the Free shipping bar. Refer to Free shipping guide for more information on setting up the free shipping feature in Symmetry.
Cart page
The cart page is a dedicated page for customers to review and manage the items they have added to the shopping cart before proceeding to checkout. This page can be configured and customized like other pages of the store using the incredible range of sections supplied in Symmetry.
Steps
- Open the Theme editor, and select Cart from the dropdown at the top.
- Click the Cart page section on the left hand side.
Cart items
Show backorder text is used to indicate to customers that an item is currently out of stock but will be shipped when it is back in stock. This setting only displays the text for products which have Shopify inventory tracking enabled, and have been set so they can be purchased when out of stock.
Show inventory notice to alert shoppers to items with low inventory and encourage purchase.
Order summary
The order summary settings control such items as:
- Show order note which permits customers to attach notes on the order.
- Show tax status and shipping policy link which displays any tax status and shipping policy links (required in some EU countries).
- Show additional checkout options is the option to enable Shopify's dynamic checkout buttons.
- The option to include a Terms and conditions link. When added, customers will be required to accept the terms and conditions before proceeding to the checkout and additional checkout options are hidden.
- Set the redirect for the Continue shopping link.
Empty cart
These settings are used to determine what is shown in an empty cart. Show a message and select where to direct a customer when they are viewing an empty cart.
Shipping rates calculator
The Symmetry theme includes a Shipping rates calculator feature that provides an estimate of shipping costs using the shipping and delivery rates set out in the Shopify admin under Settings > Shipping and delivery. Shipping costs will be finalised at checkout.
