Product labels

Product labels are visual indicators that highlight important and promotional product details.

What are product labels?

Product labels are visual indicators that highlight specific attributes of a product. They are used to communicate important details such as preorder, new arrival, sold out or sale reductions. These labels help customers to quickly identify and understand key aspects of a product, making their shopping experience more efficient. By utilizing product labels effectively, Shopify store owners can enhance product visibility, create a sense of urgency and drive sales.

How to set up product labels

Alchemy labels are displayed on the product card. In order to show product labels, they must first be enabled and configured within the Theme settings. 

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and click on the Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select the Position for the overlay label on the product card.
  3. Select the labels that are to be active on the store. For example, to enable the Sale label select the Show "Sale" label setting. 
  4. Choose the rules to manage the labels. For example the Sale label type.
  5. Select the Background color and Text color for each label.

Tip

Please note that each product is limited to display only two labels at any one time for best user experience. Having more would have an impact on the product image presentation and could negatively affect conversion.

Sale label

Sale labels can be shown for products that are on sale. In Shopify a product is on sale when the price is lower than the Compare-at price. Product prices are set using the product editor in the Shopify admin area.

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and open Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select Show "Sale" label.
  3. Choose the Sale background and Sale text colors.
  4. Set the Sale label type to be Simple text, Percent off or Money off.Sale-label.png

Sold out label

Select Show "Sold out" label to show a label on the product card when all variants of the products are sold out. The colors can also be controlled in the Theme settings for Product labels.

Low stock label

This label is only used for single variant products and shows the quantity in stock. It displays a label over the image on the product card when the stock level is below the Low stock threshold.

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and open Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select Show "Low stock" label.
  3. Set the Low stock threshold for this label.
  4. Set the Low stock background and Low stock text colors.

Note

The Low stock label on the product card is only shown for products with one variant.

New Label

A New label can be useful to alert customers to new designs and product drops. The Alchemy theme offers three methods for controlling which products show a New label. Choose the method or methods that best suit your store setup. The Collection method shows the label for your choice of collections,  useful if a store uses a new arrivals collection and offers the advantage of speed to setup. The Tag method gives individual control on a product by product level. The Date method is automatic as it uses the creation date of the product to determine if the New label is shown so this method requires no ongoing maintenance.

Collection method

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and open Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select Show "New" label.
  3. Choose the New background and New text label colors.
  4. Select Show "New" label for products in the following collections
  5. Click Select Collection to choose the collection or collections where you wish the products to show the new label. 

Tag method

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and open Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select Show "New" label.
  3. Choose the New background and New text label colors.
  4. Select Show "New" label for products with the following tag
  5. Enter the tag you wish to give your products in the "New" tag field.
  6. Go to the Shopify admin area and add a tag for the products you wish to display the label.

Date method

Steps

  1. Open the Theme Editor, and open Theme settings > Product labels.
  2. Select Show "New" label.
  3. Choose the New background and New text label colors.
  4. Select Show "New" label for products created within this many days
  5. Adjust the Days ago created slider. Any product that has been created (not published date) will show the label as long as it falls within the number of days selected.

Preorder label

A product card can show the preorder label if the name of the product template to which the product is assigned contains the word 'preorder'. Shopify's templates guide explains how to create new templates. The theme comes with a built in preorder template. 

Custom label

Add labels with custom text to individual products using Shopify's metafields functionality. This is done by creating a product metafield with the namespace and key called theme.label, and using the Single line text type to create the name of the custom label. 

Note

Custom labels are a more complex feature that requires a base level understanding of how metafields work. For support on metafields, refer to Shopify Metafields guide.

Steps

  1. In the Shopify admin area, create a Single line text product metafield with the namespace and key 'theme.label'.

  2. In the Shopify admin area, go to Products and open the product where you wish to show a label.
  3. Scroll down to the Product metafields section and enter the label text required for that specific product in the Theme label metafield. Staff-pick-metafield.png
  4. Open the Theme Editor and go to Theme Settings > Product labels and select Show Custom label.
  5. Choose the Custom background and Custom text label colors.
  6. Go to a Collection page or a section that displays product cards and view the product label on the product card.

FAQs

How do I change the overlay label text?

To change the label text, go to Edit default theme content, search for the text or look in the Products > Labels tab. Update the text to reflect your preferences. 

Caution

When editing the sale label or low stock label text be sure not to change the liquid code shown in between double curly brackets e.g. {{ amount }}
