Symmetry Vintage

If your version of Symmetry is 4.11.14 or before then you are on pre-OS 2.0 version and the guides below will apply to you.

To see which theme version you are using, head here:

  1. Admin > Online store > Customise theme
  2. In the top left-hand side of your screen, click the three little dots
  3. An additional panel appears where you will see your theme version details

Pre-order template

Vintage Symmetry (prior to OS 2.0) has a pre-order template feature by default. To find out how to set this up, you will want to watch the guide below.

Summary of steps mentioned in the above video:

  1. Head to Admin >  Products > Select your product you wish to assign your pre-order template to.
  2. Under the “Theme template” dropdown, choose ‘product.preorder’
  3. Save your changes
  4. Head to Admin > Online store > Customise theme
  5. On the left hand side panel, choose “theme settings”, then ‘products’ and make sure the toggle is active for “show pre-order label”
  6. Save your changes
Note – Your theme must be published for your templates to appear as assignable in the “theme template” dropdown list, outside of the theme editor area.

Description location

Additionally, you can change the location of the product description. You can choose to have it align over to the right under the add to cart info, or have it going across the bottom of the images.

Variant display style

There are two options for ‘Variant style’: ‘Listed’ and ‘Dropdown’. To select one of these on the product page, scroll down and select ‘Theme settings’, then scroll down until you see ‘Variant style’.

How can I make my product images smaller?

You will find an option to set the size of your images under ‘Media’ settings:

How do I set up product tabs / accordion pages?

Summary of steps mentioned in the above video:

  1. Head to Admin > Online store > Customise theme > Navigate to a product page > Click “Product pages” on the left hand side settings panel
  2. Under the “location” dropdown, choose your preferred option (if you’re looking to have your description in a tab, choose “in a tab beside media”)
  3. Choose whether you wish to have your product description tab (mentioned above) collapsed or expanded on page load.
  4. Add your desired content to tab 1, 2 and 3.
  5. Save your changes

This feature was released in version 4.11.12 of Symmetry so if you are running an older version you will need to update the theme. You will set this up by going to any product inside the theme editor, opening the product page section on the left, scroll down till you locate the description section. From here you can set up the tabs.

Can I hide unselected images?

Shopify does not include a way of filtering thumbnail images to show only those related to the current active variant (and hiding the rest). For example, showing only the blue dresses when you select a blue variant. You would need an app for this: https://apps.shopify.com/

Enable / disable image zoom

You will locate the checkbox to disable or enable image zoom here in these settings. You cannot set the strength of the zoom.

Tag groups

NOTE: The following guide still stands, the only difference is that in Symmetry you don’t need to add a comma after each tag you can just go to a new line to add the next tag. They are not case sensitive anymore,

Step A) Add tags to your products

Due to limitations with Shopify, it’s not possible to directly filter by variants for a product. Instead, we need to add a variant name to tags for each product that we want to filter.

  1. Go to Admin > Products > Select your product in the Shopify admin. At the bottom of the right-hand panel, add the tags that represent the variations the product is available in.
  2. For example, the Sizes and Colors of a particular product may be: “Small” and “Grey”
  3. Repeat this for all products which you’d like to be filterable.

Step B) Add your tag groups

Go to the Theme editor area, and navigate to a collection page.

On the left-hand side, you should see an option to add a tag group. You then need to enter the label/name of your tag group, and then the tags themselves.

  • Name/label: This is the label that shows next to your filter on your collection page.
  • Tags to include: This should be in the same case as the tags added to your products, and separated by commas.

The filters that then show on the collection page will be built from these options. If none of the products within the collection have a particular tag then that option will not be shown. For example, if none of the t-shirts with a collection come in Red (i.e. have the ‘Red’ tag associated with them), the Red option will not show.

If the products within a collection have none of the tags for a particular tag group, then the entire filter will not show. For example, if you also sold hats, none of which have customizable colours or sizes, when you create a hat collection, none of the filters in this example would show.

Things to note

  • Your customers won’t be able to select more than one option from a particular tag group. For example, users couldn’t select Red AND Blue, they could only select one or the other. However, they could select Red AND Large, because these are in two different tag groups. This is due to limitations with the standard Shopify platform – but if you do want this you may be able to find an app on the app store which can help. You could possibly create a tag called ‘Red and Blue’ which you add to a product and a tag group, although this isn’t perhaps the best user experience.
  • Avoid having two tag groups with the same name which could show at the same time.
